Cooking performance score
Cooking performance is made up of scores for defrosting, cooking, reheating, grilling, baking, roasting and using combination mode (convection, microwave and grill).

Ease of use score
We check that controls are intuitive, easy to operate and the instructions easy to follow. We also check the effectiveness of the light and whether the viewing window is large enough and easy to see through. The interior and exterior are assessed for cleaning: do the surfaces wipe clean easily and are there small holes and seams that can accumulate dirt?

Shop Ethical rating
Shop Ethical rates the environmental and social impact of the company (not the product) using independent sources. This rating is not included in our total score. N/A means there is no rating for that company.
Combination baking pizza score
We cook a freshly prepared pizza at a very high temperature for a short period on a combination of convection and microwave. This assesses the ability to crisp and brown the base and evenly cook the toppings.

Cooking vegetables score
We cook broccoli, looking for fully but not overly cooked pieces with a good bright green colour.

Combination roasting score
We roast a whole chicken on a combination of convection and microwave function to assess roasting performance of a non-uniform food at a moderate to high temperature therefore reducing the cooking time using microwave cooking, while retaining moisture and crisping the skin.

Microwave wattage (W)
Higher wattage helps to cook food faster. All models use more power in convection mode, with typical convection mode output 1400–1500W. Some models use up to 2300W.
Built-in
Some convection microwaves are built-in rather than freestanding to streamline your kitchen space.
Child lock
You can push a sequence of buttons to deactivate the microwave.
Kitchen timer (standalone)
This can be used to time other things such as boiling an egg.
Quick boost start
This starts the oven, usually with the press of a single button. With most microwaves, the cooking time increases in one or half-minute increments if you press the button again.
Sensor cook
Sensor programs take automatic functions one step further by measuring vapours emitted during cooking or reheating to adjust the cooking time and power.
Sensor reheat
Sensor programs take automatic functions one step further by measuring vapours emitted during cooking or reheating to adjust the cooking time and power.
Auto cook
Automatic functions prompt you to enter the weight and type of food for the microwave to calculate the cooking time.
Auto reheat
Automatic functions prompt you to enter the weight and type of food for the microwave to calculate the reheating time.

Availability
A Similar model is identical in most aspects except for a few. This means that a majority of its test results are identical so you can reasonably expect to get the same results from the model we tested, but for those aspects which aren't identical, we'll note these as "Not Tested" in the Compare tables.
A Tested model refers to a model that is still current and available in the Australian market. You should be able to order this model through your local retailer, or find it online.
These models can't be found in retailers or online or are no longer manufactured. You may still find these models on second hand websites, or in second hand dealers. Test methods may change over time, so criteria which can't be directly compared will contain an N/A.
An Identical model is exactly that. Performance characteristics will be identical and the only difference will be something trivial such as colour, which won't have an impact on performance.
These are models we haven't yet tested but that are available.
