Rangehoods come in various styles but which is best at clearing the air? Our experts lab test and review the latest rangehoods in ducted mode to help you find the best model for your kitchen.

Our expert testers give every rangehood a thorough workout in ducted mode to help find models that:

  • are best at removing steam from the air
  • are the least noisy, on both low and high fan settings
  • are the easiest to use and clean
  • have sufficient overhead lighting.

Our ducted rangehood test covers wall canopy, undermount (integrated) and retractable styles of rangehoods, in sizes from around 60cm to 90cm. A ducted rangehood requires a vent to extract smells outside.

Looking for a rangehood to vent air back in the room (better known as recirculating mode)? Check out our recirculating rangehood reviews.

We've partnered with Shop Ethical on this update to show the ratings that the ethical consumer group gives to major companies (not individual products).

Our interactive comparison tool helps you easily sort the style and size you need, and which brands scored the highest for key areas such as noise and performance. Our Recommended list will help you quickly see which models come out on top.

Shopping links on the CHOICE website

CHOICE is an independent, nonprofit organisation dedicated to helping consumers. Clicking a link will take you to a retailer's website to shop. While we make money if you buy through some retailer links, this doesn't influence any of our rankings. 100% of the money we make goes straight back into our nonprofit mission. We're currently testing this service and will consider providing more shopping links in the future. Tell us what you think.

      Noise score

      Expand to view more details.

Noise is measured at each fan setting using a noise level meter 500mm from the front edge of the hood. We don't recommend wall canopies with a noise score below 55% and undermount/retractable with a noise score below 46%.

How well the rangehoods extract steam in both low and high fan settings, and how much escapes from the front and sides. Water is boiled using two then four saucepans, and the more steam that escapes, the lower the steam removal score.
