Due to an influx of interest in highly efficient heat pump hot water systems, we decided to bring together data on all the brands we could find in the Australian market.

While they're quite expensive, rebates are available for many heat pump hot water systems, depending on which state you live in – sometimes to the point where they end up costing you very little.

Not sure where to start? Read our hot water system buying guide to check which type of system (gas instant, gas storage, solar, electric storage or heat pump) is best for you.

Note: We haven't scored any of the heat pumps we've looked at, so there are no Recommended models.

Heap pumps use technology normally associated with your split-system air conditioner to extract warmth from the surrounding air into a water storage tank, and pump back out the cold air. They essentially use electricity to move heat from one place to another, instead of generating heat directly like other hot water systems do.

We collated the data in this review by scouring manufacturer and retailer websites, then sent that data to each manufacturer so that they could fill in any gaps – where it says 'Not stated', the manufacturer didn't tell us the missing information.

While we don't test or score the heat pumps (purely because we don't have the required labs to do so), we expect to see more and more test data flow into the Australian market on these highly efficient hot water systems, where currently information is a little scarce and inconsistent.

    Price

    Expand to view more details.

Prices are based on what we found on retailer or manufacturer websites in March 2023. Manufacturers often sell direct to installers, so for some models the price isn't publicly available.

enter value/s in increments of 1 between 0 and 6880

    Model type

    Expand to view more details.

Integrated models are all-in-one units with the heat pump compressor at the top of the tank. Split systems have separate compressor and tank components (much like a split system air conditioner), which can allow the tank to be installed indoors.

      Capacity (L)

      Expand to view more details.

The capacity of the tank, in litres.

enter value/s in increments of i between 125 and 420

      Suitable household size

      Expand to view more details.

The household size for which this system is suitable. Generally assume 50L of hot water per person per day, plus 50% for occasional heavy usage days.

        Defrost cycle

        Expand to view more details.

Defrost cycles are essential in cold areas, where icing can occur on the compressor unit.

          Minimum working ambient temperature (°C)

          Expand to view more details.

The claimed minimum ambient temperature in which the heat pump hot water system will operate.

            Maximum working ambient temperature (°C)

            Expand to view more details.

The claimed maximum ambient temperature in which the heat pump hot water system will operate.
